Field Safety Planning
A Field Safety Plan serves as a tool to document your hazard assessment, communication plan, emergency procedures, and training. Field safety planning is essential for several reasons:
- Risk Awareness: To help you identify potential hazards in the field environment, promoting awareness and preparedness.
- Guidelines for Safety: To provide clear protocols for what to do in case of an emergency, ensuring you know how to respond effectively.
- Enhanced Learning: Knowing safety measures allows you to focus on your educational experiences without unnecessary distractions or fears.
- Team Coordination: Promoting cooperation and open communication among members of your team, helping them work together effectively in potentially risky environments.
To get started, we recommend you download the Field Safety Plan Template developed by the UC Berkeley Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S): https://ehs.berkeley.edu/publications/uc-berkeley-field-safety-plan
Please contact [email protected] for site-specific information to tailor your field safety plan based on the needs of your research group or field class. All our resident staff have received Wilderness First Responder training through NOLS and have developed site-specific emergency plans. We also provide first aid kits that are accessible at key central locations on site. Safety guidelines and code of conduct expectations will also be clearly communicated to each visiting group upon arrival.
